A tooth with extensive decay, a large filling, a crack, or other structural damage may require restoration with a crown. Made of all-porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or all metal, a crown covers a tooth completely; a crown is sometimes called a cap. In some cases, we can place an inlay or onlay, a conservative alternative to a crown. Inlays, onlays, and crowns are milled restorations made in a dental lab. They restore function, strength, and beauty to structurally compromised teeth.
To design and place a crown, inlay, or onlay, expect two visits to our Ottawa office unless your dentist recommends a CEREC one-visit restoration. For two-visit crowns, your first appointment will involve preparing the tooth, taking an impression for the lab, and placing a temporary. After your restoration returns from the dental lab, you'll visit again so the dentist can remove your temporary and place your permanent crown, inlay, or onlay.
